CAPOEIRA (pronounced ka-poo-eyh-rah) is an Afro-Brazilian martial art and self-defense discipline that brings together fighting techniques, acrobatics, dance, percussion, and songs. Capoeira is such an important art expression that it is part of the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Abada-capoeira is represented throughout Brazil and in over 50 countries. In the DC, MD and VA area, Abada-capoeira is under the guidance of Mesttranda Yara, who has been a capoeira practitioner since 1982 and teaching since 1996, working with the most diverse groups: children, adolescents, adults, people with special needs, and the elderly.
